Mount Zion Cemetery
This cemetery is across from a newly built Mount Zion Church.
There are actually two cemeteries about 250 yards apart. One appears to
be African American which has a old church still standing The graves
around it are African American. The original Mount Zion cemetery was
established 1844 and is in use today.
This survey is a complete survey of this cemetery.
Based on information I have received the land was donated by James
Lea Wilcox who is buried there. I am also told the original name of the
cemetery was called Spectacles or The Wilcox Family Cemetery.
At the beginning of this cemetery near the ponds are several above
ground crypt type burials and a mixture of unmark slabs. This must the
original cemetery and it expanded from there. There is an monument there
that has about 50 names on it. Based on the information it appears that
the burials in that section could be those on the monument.
According to Mrs. Johnnie Knight daughter of Vera Rhodes The upper
cemetery was started when her father James Wilcox Tomberlin mother
passed away. They dug four times to make a grave and each time it filled
with water. So they had to leave the lower part of the cemetery and move
to higher ground and the new part of the cemetery was begun.

I will start with the lower part and go from there. I did find a
few of them with there own headstone. The monument states the James Lea
Willcox family.
