Judge Smith Turner born
2/10/1810 Tattnall Co. died 10/6/1880 Wilcox Co. Born in Tattnall Co., Ga.
A son of James Turner. He grew up in that county and came with his parents
to Irwin Co. about 1835. He married Mrs. Mary Adams (Locke) in 1839 in
Irwin Co. They settled in the 690th District (now the Chula Dist in Tift
Co) which district in those days embraced territory now in Tift, Turner
and Wilcox Co.'s. He served as Captain of the 690th district Militia,
1835-1850. He served as Sheriff of Irwin Co, 1838-1840 a Representative,
1841. and Sheriff again 1844-1850. Senator from Irwin Co, 1849-1850.
Justice of Irwin Co Inferior Court 1857-1858. In the creation of Wilcox Co
out of Irwin Co he was cut into that county and was immediately elected as
one of the first Inferior Court Justices serving 1858-1861. He was a
Delegate from Wilcox Co to the Secession convention in January 1861. He
was elected on a Secession Ticket. He and his wife were members of New
Hope Primitive Baptist Church and both died members and also both buried
there. Mr. & Mrs. Smith Turner had four daughters. Mary b. 1845 m. Robert
FITZGERALD, Isabelle b.1847 m. 1st James JOHNSON, 2nd. Dr. THIGPIN. Martha
b.1849 m. William STATHAM. Calledonia b 1851 m. Eli w. JOHNSON.
