Rochelle's Great Fire
December 22, 1898, Abbeville Chronicle,
Photographed from laminated newsprint located in Wilcox County
Courthouse, Abbeville, Georgia, April 2008 |
Rochelle had a very serious fire Monday night
which came very near destroying the entire business portion of the town.
The fire originated in a negro restaurant and was headway when
discovered about 10 o'clock. Below we give a list of those burned out:
T Gottlieb, general merchandise
EAI Schappel, Gen. mdse
Miss Annie Smith, millinery
Dave Jones, col. fruit stand
Giddeo, beef market
Hamilton Bros., groceries
J B D Woodburn, store house, empty
Pickard's barber shop
Sam Fenn, general merchandise
Taylor, general merchandise
Peterson's beef market
P H Coffee's drug store
Upchurch, saloon
W B Owens, general store and telephone exchange
Mitchell's beef market
George Holliday, general store
Miss Rosa Jackson, millinery
Henry Mashburn, general store
J H Shirah, music store
Miss Inez Turrentine, millinery
Everything being so dry and the supply of water exhausted the fire had
its complete sway and burned 'till all exposures were consumed. This is
terrible, just at his time and is deeply deplored by the friends of the
sufferers
