Cedar Creek Baptist Churchyard

These Cemetery records  were originally transcribed and published in The Passing of the Pines: A History of Wilcox County Georgia Volumes I, II and III by authors, Mary Lou L. McDonald and Samuel Jordan Lawson III. These books are copyrighted and we have asked for and received permission to use them on this website. We appreciate their generosity in allowing us to use these records on this web site.

A complete inventory of the tombstone inscriptions in this churchyard was made by Harry Blue on 25 April 1981 and a follow-up was made 4 May 1982. It was my intent to show all of the genealogical information and not all of the lengthy inscriptions which appear on some of the markers. Therefore, in this listing you will find the complete name, including any reference to mother and father or other relative, and the birth and death dates in that order.

You will note that I have consistently used the abbreviation for the month of the year. In many instances the month was completely spelled out on the grave marker, however, in the interest of time and space I used the abbreviation.

There are about four hundred and sixty-four (464) marked graves in this cemetery. Some of these markers have no information whatever upon them. A pile of field stones mark the graves of some and certainly there are many graves which are no longer marked in any way. My cousin, Thomas Childs, and I were talking and we both remember a number of "heart pine" markers in the cemetery when we were children, but these markers no longer exist.

When more than one marker exists for the same individual, be it military or some other type, I have shown this information immediately below the original entry. When any special markings appear such as Masonic Emblems or Woodmen of the World Emblems, I have made a note of this; fact.

Cedar Creek Baptist Church is located in the northeastern part of Wilcox County, Georgia, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 129 and Georgia Highway 233. This is approximately 15 miles almost due south of Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, Georgia.

I have attempted to be completely accurate in this listing. Errors may have occurred. If so it was because of the difficulty in reading the weather worn inscriptions or simply a human error. If such exists, please forgive me.

The following is a compilation of the gravesites which have marker without inscriptions in the Cedar Creek Baptist Churchyard of Wilcox County, Georgia. There are approximately forty-nine (49) gravesites which can be located by broken markers, poured concrete slabs slabs which have no markings, a wrought iron fenced enclosure with no identifying marks, or piled fieldstones indicating a gravesite is present but has no discernable marks to identify whose grave it might be. There is also one large walled enclosure of stone and mortar which has no identifying markings. Each of these grave markers with no inscription has been indentified as being adjacent to another gravesite which does have identifying marks.

1-4. At the northwest corner of the church there are four (4) full size poured concrete slab markers which have no identifying marks. The grave nearest to these four is that of Thomas R., son of B.M. & F.H. Dennard, Apr. 30,1896-Dec. 11, 1912; Mrs. Martha Doster Sims, a lifelong resident of the community, identified these gravesites as those of Benjamin M. (Lank) Dennard, Frances (Frankie) Dennard, Sallie Dennard Drown, Benjamin Dennard.

5. 5. A pile of rough field stones is adjacent to the grave of Mary A. Mitchell, Jan. 10, 1846-Apr. 21, 1927

6. 6. There is a second pile of rough field stones adjacent to the first mentioned above, and again it would be nearest to the grave of Mary A. Mitchell, Jan. 10, 1846-Apr. 21, 1927

7. 7. A small poured concrete slab marker, apparently an infant, is adjacent to the gravesite of Mamie W. Johnson, July 11, 1891-July 28, 1970

8-8-10. There are three piles of field stones adjacent to the gravesite of Elmira, wife of T.J. Conner, Oct. 25, 1836-Dec. 18, 1890

11.-12. There are two small size poured concrete markers adjacent to the gravesite of Susie Graham Surratt, wife of J.E. Surratt, Sept. 27, 1902-Mar. 2, 1932; these are apparently her children, Jimmie Sue & Janie Lou.

13. There is a pile of field stones adjacent to the gravesite of Ruth Shepard Graham, May 22, 1909.

14. A pile of field stones adjacent to the gravesite of Martha Carolyn Eckardt, Aug. 15, 1922-Oct. 19, 1978.

15. A broken marker with such a small amount present that identification is impossible. This is adjacent to the gravesite of Eliza Jane Johnson, wife of Troy Johnson, 1821-July 24, 1876.

16.-17. Two piles of field stones adjacent to the gravesite of Ida Gertrude, daughter of Troy Junior & Minnie Johnson, Aug. 20, 1887-Oct. 16, 1887.

1818. A small size wrought iron fenced enclosure in line with the two above mentioned sites. This enclosure stands pretty much alone in the middle of the cemetery.

1919. A full size poured concrete slab marker nearest the gravesite of Eligia Ryle, July 4, 1900-July 16, 1900.

20. A small size poured concrete slab marker nearest the gravesite of Eligia Ryle.

21. A full size poured concrete slab marker immediately adjacent to the gravesite of William A. Lovette, Georgia, Sgt., 33 Inf., Jan. 1, 1930.

22. The above marker is followed by another full size poured concrete slab marker with no markings. A funeral home marker identifies this grave to be Ollie Myrick.

23. A poured concrete marker is adjacent to the gravesite of Mary Lou Knight, July 20, 1922-Mar. 3, 1970.

24. A small poured concrete slab adjacent to the gravesite of Betty Nell Pittman, 1955-1974
